Synopsis

Makoto, a 30-year-old Japanese businessman, wakes up and finds himself on a beach he’s never seen. As he struggles to get out of the strange place, he meets peculiar characters who help him understand that he is, actually, already dead like them. His father Kiyoshi is deeply saddened by his loss. He and his son have had a fallout and now all he has is regret. Using magic realism, Green Grass will show how father and son find a way to make peace with their pasts and find new paths to go on even though they now belong to different realms.

Notes from the director

The inspiration for “Green Grass” came from the kind of moments in life where we find ourselves at a loss for words. One such moment is when we have lost everything, we don’t know what to do next and how to face a new beginning. We would be deeply affected by our wounds and failures. However, if we finally understand and accept them, new unimagined paths can unfold in front of our eyes.
Also want to show the importance of waiting for the right time and being patient. By putting distance between oneself and an overwhelming experience, we can think clearly and understand better what is happening, which in turn leads us to take clear actions that will open to new possibilities. This idea is manifested throughout the film, shown through a naturalist world that constantly breaks with the narrative; where Latin American magic realism is crossed with the oriental way to make time and space be felt as living paintings framed by a cinematic image.
